Appendix D. Evaluating Quality of Service

About the Current QoS Implementation in the AP

Quality of Service (QoS) and Wireless Multimedia Extensions (WME) are technologies for enabling Wi-Fi networks to give higher priority to real-time traffic like voice over IP (VoIP) and streaming video. The current implementation of the Devicescape Enterprise-Managed AP (documented in the Administrator Guide) provides pre-standard QoS functionality using four queues based on type of service (ToS) flags set in the IP headers. This implementation only prioritizes packets transmitted from the AP to the wireless clients.

About the Upcoming WME Implementation in the AP

Instant802 Networks is in the process of implementing the new WME features specific to the Wi-Fi standards for the Devicescape Enterprise-Managed AP. This project is on-going while Wi-Fi standards for this technology are still being refined. The new QoS implementation will allow prioritization of traffic from AP to wireless client stations (STA) as well as from wireless STA to AP.

We recommend waiting for the next release of the Devicescape Enterprise-Managed AP with standards-based WME solutions incorporated before implementing your own performance tests on QoS in the AP. With that release, Instant802 will provide a description of sample test scenarios and tools for evaluating WME performance on the AP.
