Easy Wi-Fi and iPhone OS 3.0

iPhone OS 3.0 problems!

iPhone OS 3.0 breaks EWF

Dear Devicescape Easy Wi-Fi Users,

We're sorry to tell you that the new firmware 3.0 for the iPhone and iPod touch disables Easy Wi-Fi. This impacts all versions of our applications:

  • Easy Wi-Fi (original, multi network version)
  • Easy Wi-Fi for AT&T iPhones
  • Easy Wi-Fi for T-Mobile
  • Easy Wi-Fi for Trustive
  • Easy Wi-Fi for Wi2

What Happens - Good and Bad News

In iPhone OS 3.0, Apple introduced an automated hotspot login feature. For iPhones which have Wi-Fi bundled with their cellular service - like AT&T in the US - this means that your device will login whenever you're at one of their hotspots. Pretty cool!

At other hotspots, iPhone OS tries to help you login by popping up a web form for you to type in your username and password. Apple are trying to be helpful, but if you cancel out of that they assume you don't want to use WiFi and will stop you using that hotspot! (In technical terms the device disassociates from the access point.) This has the effect of disabling Easy Wi-Fi, since Wi-Fi is simply not active whenever you run our app!

Ouch! What Is Affected?

Users of iPhones whose carriers offer bundled WiFi will get a good experience from the new automated login. If you use the iPod touch or other WiFi networks you will always get Apple's web form for you to login manually. Easy Wi-Fi will not be able to help you get access quickly and easily.

What Now?

We are trying to work with Apple to find a resolution to this problem. Until we can, you won't be able to use Easy Wi-Fi. For more information, or to tell us what you think, check out our blog or iPhone forum.

We hope to return service to our loyal users as quickly as we can.

Sincerely,
The Devicescape Team.
